Our classification of flatbed trailers includes single drop and double drop flatbeds in addition to standard flatbeds. It also includes extendable flatbeds or drop trailers. The flatbed trailer is the workhorse in cargo handling. It moves all the odd sized, heavy, and difficult to load cargo. Many variations in flatbed features exist. The least costly is the steel frame, wood floor, and fixed closed tandem spring ride. Your selection of the right flatbed trailer should be based on your particular application and use.

Flatbed Trailer Size Options:
In the USA the most popular flatbed trailer lengths are: 28’, 40’, 45’, 48’, and 53’. The most common width for a long time was 96”, since the 1990’s onward 102” has been the preferred width. Though a lot of 96” wide flatbeds are in the used market. The common deck height is 58” on standard flatbeds. However, a measure is to be taken if a certain height is required. Variations do exist. The single drop flatbed lower cargo deck height is 40”. The center cargo deck on a double drop flatbed is approx. 28” off the ground.
The main areas where variations exist are:
- Main and side rail construction: Steel vs Aluminum
- Floor Construction: Wood vs Aluminum.
- Suspension System: Spring vs Air ride. (other options are walking beam & single point)
- Axles: the quantity of axles can vary from 2-4. The type of axles are either Spoke, Budd Stud Piloted, or 10HOLE Hub Piloted.
- Axle positioning can vary: 8’ spread axle, 10’ spread axle, closed fixed tandem, or closed sliding tandem. A tri or quad axle is usually configured as fixed closed position.
- Tires: Flatbeds typically come in 22.5 LOW PROFILE, 11R22.5, and 11R24.5.
- Flatbed body enclosures: A curtain side or Conestoga flatbed is a flatbed enclosed to look like a dry van but can be side loaded.
- Extendable Flatbed trailers: The extendable feature is available in standard flatbeds, single drops, and double drops. Extensions range, up to 30’ typically.
Cargo Carrying Capacity:
A standard tandem axle flatbed, or even spread axle, is designed to handle 35ton load. Specialty construction such as heavy duty beams, and narrower cross member spacing can increase the capacity to 50tons and beyond. Some flatbeds are designed for specialty loads such as coils which require high capacity demands over a smaller footprint.
