About Yard/Terminal Tractors:

The standard yard tractor is a 4×2. However, 4×4 & 4×6 yard tractors do exist. Various combinations of transmission and differential exist depending on the operational objective.  In the USA yard tractors are either OFF-ROAD or DOT (ON Highway). If you plan on driving the yard tractor on public roads a DOT (On Highway) model is required to comply with DOT regulations. Single rear axle yard tractors are the most popular in the USA.

The most popular power units in yard tractors is Cummins & Cat. The hp range is 175hp-275hp. The most common transmission is auto Allison. Rear differentials ratio can vary from 9 to 20 depending on operational requirements. Suspensions are typically rigid spring.  Air ride is available.  In general the systems on tractors pre 2007 are simple and not heavy on technology.
